What is the difference between a CONSERVATOR and a RESTORER.

Many people are confused about the difference between an art conservator and a restorer.  To the layperson there is seemingly no difference and the terms are used interchangeably.  However, this is very much not the case and the gulf between "restoration" and "conservation" is rapidly widening.  Art conservators are generally academically trained to at least the level of a Master's degree (M.A.C. – Master’s of Art Conservation – see FAQ on Where do I get conservation training?).  They have training in the scientific, art historical and artistic aspects and requirements of works of art.  Fine art conservation is relatively new (only the last 50-60 years, since WWII) whereas restoration has arguably existed since the beginning of the creation of art when artists restored their own or others' works.  Restorers tend to have been trained as artisans (often apprenticed to artists) or have learned by experience.  This type of learning is a necessary but not sufficient condition to treat works of art in a manner that will reliably ensure their survival.
Conservators attempt to perform the minimum treatment necessary and use as many reversible materials as possible – this is considerably different than a restoration approach.  Conservation addresses the work of art not only from the aesthetic but from a materials point of view.  The structure of a work of art must be thoroughly understood and preserved in order to preserve the image.

End wall-House of Livia Mural
One end wall of the frescoed triclinium (dining room) in the House of Livia, Rome. The garden is populated with plants related to life, death, and immortality. An oak (linked to Jupiter's power) flanked by a pomegranite at left (attribute of Demeter and fertility symbol) and quince at right (sacred to Aphrodite and bestowing good luck at weddings) laden with fruit. In the background between these are oleander bushes in bloom (toxic and symbols of death) and cyprus trees. The flowers lower down include (from left to right) coronary chrysanthemum (woven into funerary garlands to protect the dead), opium poppy (a prominent narcotic in the myth of Demeter), cabbage rose (a symbol of love), fetid camomille (used in garlands, known for medicinal value). In front of the low fence grow wild violets (associated with Attis and carried in procession each March 22nd on the 'dies violae') interspersed with common solopendra, a member of the fern family (protected against snakes and may have been used at funerals). The birds include thrushes, a blackbird, a partridge, The paintings date from 30-20 BC. The murals are now displayed in a dedicated room of the National Museum of Rome, Palazzo Massimo.

SCENIC WALLPAPER LES SAUVAGES DE LA MER PACIFIQUE IN CHARVET COLOURWAY

History of Papiers Peints Panoramiques
Block-printed panoramic wallpapers were developed in early 19th century France and called: Papiers Peints Panoramiques - the name that de Gournay uses today. This genre continued the decorative painting tradition of ornamental panels that pre-dates the French Revolution. With designs spanning the exotic, historic, mythical, topographical and monumental, wealthy clients could opt to escape from reality, bring the beauty of nature into the interior or to surround themselves with a particular epoch, historical event or geographic location.

de Gournay has developed some designs in-house including Early Views of India, which is based on Thomas & William Daniel's aquatints published in A Voyage to India by Way of China and Views of the Holy Land I and which is based on David Roberts' lithographs published in The Holy Land and Syria, Idumea, Egypt, Nubia.

Other designs such as Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique, Les Rives du Bosphore, Telemachus and La Chasse de Compiegne were designed for manufacturers such as Jacquemart, Dufour and Velay. Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique, one of the first Papiers Peints Panoramiques designs ever produced, was created by Jean Gabriel Charvet for Dufour in 1804.

de Gournay is happy to create new designs for you or to reproduce old designs that are no longer being block-printed in France.

18th Century French hand blocked wallpaper

The European Panoramics Collection is a range of beautiful hand- painted wallpaper murals designs. The designs are mostly based on the original 18th Century French hand blocked wallpapers which were well known in Europe and are still popular today.
